Minting tokens

Creating fungible tokens and NFTs under the treasury's multisig policy.

Mint (community sidebar) lets a community create its own native tokens or NFTs. The minting policy is the treasury's own script, template included, so a mint is approved exactly like a payout: the signers of the chosen spending path sign it in their wallets, and on a co-signer treasury the co-signer signs a mint too.

Who can mint

The form is shown to treasury base signers. Anyone else sees "Only treasury signers can mint tokens." A signer can only mint from a treasury they sign for ("Only signers of this treasury can mint"); recovery signers and co-signers cannot mint. The community also needs at least one treasury ("Create a multisig treasury first — its signers become the minting policy"), and your wallet must be on the community's network.

The mint form

  1. Minting treasury (policy) — which treasury's signers authorise this mint. Treasuries you sign for are marked "(you sign)"; a community with a single treasury has it preselected.
  2. Token type — Fungible token or NFT.
  3. The token details (below).
  4. Policy — see Open or time-locked policies.
  5. Send minted tokens to — defaults to the treasury address; paste another address on the community's network to mint straight to someone else.
  6. Spending path — shown only when the treasury offers a choice (on a co-signer treasury, Co-signed by default or Bypass (every base signer); see Spending paths). A lock-until treasury cannot mint before its date and says so instead. Mints never use the recovery path.
  7. Build mint transaction — opens the signing page.

Fungible token

FieldNotes
Asset nameThe on-chain name, at most 32 bytes, with no leading or trailing spaces.
TickerShort symbol, 1 to 9 letters or digits (typed in upper case), for example GVT. Used to match bounties later.
Decimals0 to 12. 2 means the smallest unit is one hundredth.
Total supplyIn display units, honouring the decimals; must be greater than zero.
LogoRequired. An image (PNG, JPEG, GIF or WebP up to 10 MB; SVG is not accepted) uploaded to IPFS; its ipfs:// URI is shown once pinned.
Description, WebsiteOptional metadata.

NFT

Add one or more NFTs — + Add another NFT (same transaction), up to 10 per transaction — each with a Name (the on-chain asset name, at most 32 bytes, unique within the transaction), an optional Description, a required Image (same formats and size as the logo, uploaded to IPFS) and optional Traits as key/value pairs. Every NFT is minted with quantity 1 in the same transaction.

Open or time-locked policies

  • Open — treasury multisig script. The policy ID is the treasury's script hash, its template included, so a templated treasury's policy differs from a plain multisig of the same signers and the lock, recovery branch or co-signer applies to every later mint under it. The signers can mint more of the same token later, or mint further NFTs under the same policy.
  • Time-locked — fixed supply after a date. The policy is the treasury script and a deadline. Nothing can be minted under it after that date, which makes the supply provably fixed. Choose Locks at (at least one hour in the future) for a new locked policy, or pick an existing locked policy of this treasury that has not expired yet to add to it. A time-locked mint transaction is only valid until the lock, so the signing page shows "Valid until slot … (policy time lock)": collect the signatures before that.

Signing and confirmation

The mint transaction goes through the normal signing flow: each signer of its spending path approves in their wallet, the final signature submits, and the periodic check marks it confirmed. On a co-signer treasury a co-signed mint also needs the co-signer, who signs only when the co-signer check finds that the mint forges exactly the recorded assets to the recorded recipient. A mint from a lock-until treasury is valid only from the lock date. The transaction page shows a mint preview with the token metadata and images.

Token metadata follows CIP-25 (label 721); images are pinned on IPFS. The record is keyed by the policy ID, then by each asset name, and carries the name, image and mediaType of every token, its description and website url when entered, the ticker and decimals of a fungible token, and any NFT traits as further keys. Expanding On-chain CIP-25 metadata on the transaction page shows the raw record with a what the keys mean legend above it.

Minted assets

Below the form, Minted assets lists every token the community has minted with its type (FT or NFT), quantity, date, transaction state, policy lock date if any, its unit (policy id + asset name) with a copy button, and a link to its transaction. For a fungible token, CIP-26 draft ↓ downloads a draft entry for the Cardano token registry (<unit>.json, with the name, description, ticker, decimals, website and logo), so wallets and explorers can show the ticker, decimals and logo. The draft is unsigned: sign it with the policy keys (token-metadata-creator) before opening a registry pull request.

Confirmed mints can prefill the form so you do not re-enter every field:

  • Mint more — on a fungible token whose policy can still mint (open, or time-locked and not yet expired). Fills the form with the same treasury, asset name, ticker, decimals, logo and metadata, keeps that policy, and locks those identity fields so the new transaction increases supply of the same on-chain unit. Enter only the new supply, then build as usual.
  • Use as template — on every confirmed mint (and as a second action next to Mint more). Copies metadata into the form without locking identity. For an NFT the name is cleared so you choose a new one; for an expired time-locked FT the policy resets to open because that locked policy can no longer mint. A template under a new policy is a different token even if you keep the old name.

Start blank on the form banner clears a prefill. Pending or rejected mints offer neither action.

Using minted tokens

Once confirmed, a minted token sits in the treasury like any other asset. It is discovered automatically: use its ticker in a task's bounty and Payday will match it to the treasury's balance. See Payday.
